Remembering Hyderabad’s Yesteryear Glory – City of Heroes Hyderabad

Hyderabad, 15th September 2018: In a glittering ceremony, on 15 September, at the Trillion Ballroom of Park Hotel, Hyderabad, a galaxy of distinguished international sports persons from the city were honoured and felicitated.

Even those distinguished sportsmen and women who could not attend like Pullela Gopichand and Sania Mirza sent videos of appreciation.

Over forty outstanding sportsmen and women and distinguished coaches of different eras assembled at Park Hotel and were honoured on the occasion. The list included 1996 Olympian hockey goalkeeper Edward Alloysius, former national table tennis champion Mir Kasim Ali, international cyclist Trevor Maxwell, international basketball players Rizwan Ali and Hari, distinguished badminton coach M. Arif, Olympian and twice Asian Games medalist in heptathlon, JJ Shoba, Olympian football players Tulsidas Balaraman, SS Hakeem and HH Hamid, member of the 1962 Asian Games Gold medal wining football team DMK Afzal, captain of the 1974 Asian Junior football championships winning team Shabbir Ali, legendary internationals Mohammed Habib, Mohammed Akbar, Mohammed Farid and V. Amalraj and few others.

The session started with an interaction between Hyderabad’s oldest living sports journalist, 89 year old N. Ganesan and his son G. Rajaraman on Hyderabad sports of yore. They were joined by distinguished commentator Novy Kapadia who along with Rajaraman spoke to the former distinguished internationals and made them recall their playing careers and anecdotes about their youth and Hyderabad sports.

There was a special tribute to legendary former National coach the late SA Rahim, chaired by Novy Kapadia
1956 and 1960 Olympian T. Balaraman gave an emotional account of his association with SA Rahim and traced the highlights of his distinguished career. Afzal, Hamid, former Head of Football, Birumal and SS Hakeem also spoke on the occasion.

The event was presided by Jayesh Ranjan IAS (Prinicipal Secretary to Govt of Telangana), Nawab Najaf Ali Khan (Grandson HEH The VII Nizam), Allipuram Venkateshwar Reddy (Chairman, Sports Authority of Telangana State) & PVSM Lt. Col. KR Rao.
